7 Days Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route

7 Days Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route

The Umbwe Route is a lesser-known but truly remarkable trail on Kilimanjaro—perfect for trekkers seeking a quieter, more intimate start to their adventure. Although the first two days are steeper than other trails, the route is still very manageable for most climbers, especially with the recommended 7-day itinerary that gives beginners more time to acclimatize.

Starting on the southern side of Mount Kilimanjaro, Umbwe merges with the Lemosho and Machame routes by the third day, just before the iconic Barranco Wall. One of its greatest advantages is the peaceful beginning—you’ll hardly encounter other trekkers during the first two days, allowing you to connect deeply with the mountain’s untouched beauty.

Scenic and rich in variety, the Umbwe Route takes you through all of Kilimanjaro’s climatic zones, from lush forests to alpine deserts, with opportunities to spot unique plants and wildlife along the way. For trekkers who want both solitude and incredible views, Umbwe is an excellent choice.

"7 Days Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route" Safari Itinerary

Upon arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a PK Adventure representative will greet you and take you to your hotel. Your accommodation is prepared for a relaxing stay, offering comfortable rooms, hot showers, friendly staff, a swimming pool, and reliable internet access. In the evening, you’ll meet with our team for a detailed briefing to ensure you’re fully prepared for the adventure ahead.

Private tour packages include shared airport transfers for your group. Additional fees apply for extra individual transfers, so coordinating your group’s arrival and departure times is the best way to avoid extra costs.

Your guide and climbing support crew will arrive at your hotel in the morning. After introductions and a final equipment check, you will drive to the Umbwe Gate of Kilimanjaro National Park. This entrance, located at 1,800 m / 5,904 f above sea level, marks the start of your trek. The chief guide will complete the permit formalities and handle registration with the search and rescue service.

Your first trekking day leads you to Umbwe Camp for your initial overnight stay. The ascent to 2,850 m / 9,348 f is long and involves a significant increase in altitude, so it is important to maintain a steady and comfortable pace. This section of the Umbwe Route passes through dense rainforest, making rain showers likely—be sure to keep your rain gear accessible. By the time you reach the camp, your support crew will have everything prepared, including your tents and dinner.

This day begins with an early wake-up and a nourishing breakfast before your team sets out toward Barranco Camp. As you ascend, the dense rainforest gradually transitions into open moorland. If the weather is clear, you may catch your first glimpse of Mount Meru rising in the distance.

The trek is moderate in length, and around lunchtime you are expected to arrive at Barranco Camp (3,900 m / 12,792 f), which sits within a vast volcanic fault. Lunch will be served upon arrival, after which you will have the rest of the day to relax—an important part of supporting proper acclimatization.

Today is dedicated to rest at one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic spots — Barranco Camp. From here, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the dendrosenecio valley, as well as a clear look at tomorrow’s challenge: the Barranco Wall. Taking a relaxed day at this altitude is extremely beneficial for acclimatization, giving your body time to adjust while offering a well-deserved break from the demands of the previous trekking days.

Use this time to appreciate the stunning landscape and regain your strength. Your guides will also offer an acclimatization hike to a higher point, allowing you to “climb high and sleep low,” which is an essential part of preparing for a successful summit.

This day begins with another early wake-up and a filling breakfast before your group starts the ascent of Barranco Wall. It is recommended to leave camp as early as possible to avoid crowding from other groups, which can slow down the climb. Despite its imposing appearance, the ascent is not technically difficult and usually takes about an hour. Once at the top, you can rest and take photos with the impressive Kibo volcano as your backdrop.

Afterward, you will continue with a more challenging hike toward Karanga Camp, a route characterized by multiple ascents and descents. There is no need to worry—our guides will maintain an optimal pace tailored to the group. Upon reaching Karanga Camp, you will be served a warm lunch.

A few hours later, you will go on an acclimatization hike toward Barafu Camp, gaining approximately 200 m / 656 f in altitude, before descending back to Karanga Camp for the night.

In the morning after breakfast, you will begin your hike to Barafu Summit Camp (4,673 m / 15,327 f), the staging point for the night ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,336 f). Our team will have the camp prepared in advance—including tents and sleeping bags—so you can relax immediately upon arrival. After resting and regaining strength, you will go on an acclimatization hike toward the intermediate Kosovo Summit Camp (4,870 m / 15,974 f), then return to Barafu Camp, where a hot dinner will be served. It is recommended to spend the remainder of the day resting and sleeping in preparation for the night summit attempt.

Your group will leave Barafu Camp around midnight to begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,336 f). Although the route itself is not technically difficult, the high altitude makes even normal physical effort feel demanding. For this final push, every two climbers are paired with a personal guide who closely monitors their physical and mental condition throughout the climb.

Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, you may choose to walk to one of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers before beginning your descent. The group will then return to Barafu Camp for a two-hour rest before continuing down to Millennium Camp (3,950 m / 12,956 f).

Please keep in mind that while descending often feels easier, it is also the stage where most trekking accidents occur, so careful attention and a steady pace are essential.

Millennium Camp sits amid a lush rainforest. The lower altitude, combined with the satisfaction of reaching your goal, usually makes for an excellent night’s rest. After breakfast, the group will begin the final descent toward Mweka Gate, the Kilimanjaro National Park exit at 1,640 m / 5,379 f. This final stretch provides a great opportunity to reflect on your journey and share memories with your guides and support team.

Upon reaching the gate, you will be transferred to our office to receive your certificates of accomplishment before being driven back to your hotel.

After breakfast on the final morning, you are transferred back toward Arusha and onward to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your departure flight. Your 5-day Tanzania Kilimanjaro trek — part of the PK Adventure — concludes, leaving you with memories of varied ecosystems and the wild heart of Tanzania.

Please Note:

  • By default our tours include shared accommodation in twin/double rooms, unless requested and agreed otherwise. Single supplement is available upon request. Please refer to the program to see your accommodation arrangements
  • Moshi and Arusha-based accommodations usually include breakfast only, unless requested and agreed otherwise. Please refer to the program to see your meal plans on each night
  • Most safari lodges usually do not include tea, coffee, soft and alcoholic drinks not to have you overpay for beverages you don’t need. You will be able to order and pay for drinks at the hotels’ restaurants
  • Tented lodges are the most common type of accommodation in savannah. Many of them work on solar energy. This sometimes means bucket showers, limited wi-fi and no hair dryers, all in an effort to reduce environmental impact. We encourage you to do some basic research on the accommodations in your program to ensure the safari matches your travel style
