Safari in National Parks: Lake Natron, Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park

Embark on an unforgettable seven-day safari adventure packed with breathtaking wildlife encounters! Your journey takes you to the surreal shores of Lake Natron, where pink flamingos and pelicans thrive near the dramatic Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano—an isolated and rarely explored gem. You’ll also descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, a one-of-a-kind ecosystem formed within the walls of an ancient volcano, before venturing into the legendary Serengeti, famed for its massive herds of migrating wildebeest and zebras, as well as its thriving populations of cheetahs and lions. Each destination has its own distinct charm, promising a safari filled with awe-inspiring moments.

The best time to embark on this journey is from July to October, when Lake Natron becomes a nesting ground for flamingos, and the Serengeti comes alive with the dramatic Great Migration.

"Nyota" Safari Itinerary

The group arrives at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO). Participants are met by a representative of PK Adventure and transferred to a hotel in Arusha.

Note: The hotel cost only includes breakfast. Check-in starts at 2:00 PM.

This day of your journey unfolds at Lake Natron, a stunning and secluded destination. Frequently highlighted in wildlife publications, Lake Natron is unlike anywhere else on Earth—its striking red waters are the result of unique bacteria with a vivid, blood-red hue. This phenomenon is best appreciated from an aerial perspective, making it a photographer’s dream. The area boasts sweeping African landscapes and is home to wildlife such as ostriches, antelopes, giraffes, and zebras. Due to its isolated location, it remains relatively untouched by mass tourism, making it an ideal spot to begin or wrap up a northern Tanzania safari.

Daytime temperatures can get quite high, but nearby natural springs provide a refreshing retreat. Fed directly by the slopes of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, these waters are crystal clear and rich in sulfur. Some researchers suggest the mineral content may support bone development—while we can’t confirm the science, a dip in these springs is certainly revitalizing.

Surrounding the lake are traditional African communities, including the well-known Maasai people. Visiting their villages offers a rare and meaningful glimpse into their enduring culture and daily life.

A Maasai village visit is available at an extra cost – you are welcome to ask your travel manager for more details if you’re interested!

Lake Natron is home to an incredible variety of birdlife, most notably both large and small flamingos, which can gather here in the tens of thousands! Watching these striking pink birds take flight is an unforgettable sight. Flamingos are especially drawn to Lake Natron due to its highly alkaline waters, which act as a natural barrier against predators—offering them a safe and undisturbed breeding ground.

From September to April each year, Lake Natron becomes the world’s primary nesting site for Lesser Flamingos, with over 75% of the global population hatching here. The birds lay their eggs in the shallow, muddy areas of the lake, and the newly hatched chicks can often be seen along the shores. Through binoculars, you might spot these tiny, gray-feathered youngsters as they take their very first steps. Soon, their feathers will start to turn pink as they grow.

Beyond flamingos, the area also attracts pelicans and a variety of other bird species. Observing them in their natural habitat is a completely different experience than seeing them in captivity—they’re full of life, movement, and playful energy.

Today, your guide will lead you on a scenic trek to the Engaresero Falls—a hidden gem nestled in the heart of the Lake Natron region. These beautiful waterfalls can only be reached on foot, with no vehicle access. A local Maasai guide will accompany you on the journey, which takes about an hour. Be sure to wear lightweight shoes that can handle a bit of water, as the trail may lead through streams. At the base of the falls, natural pools invite you to take a refreshing swim—so don’t forget your swimsuit and towel!

While exploring the Natron area, you may also encounter some of the region’s wildlife. Although animal sightings here are not as dense as in the Serengeti, it’s still common to see giraffes, zebras, ostriches, hyenas, impalas, wildebeests, and other savannah species. Keep your camera within reach—there’s always something worth capturing.

To top it all off, you’ll be in the shadow of one of East Africa’s rare active volcanoes: Ol Doinyo Lengai, known as the “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language. This striking volcanic landscape provides a dramatic backdrop for unforgettable photos of the African wilderness.

Today, you’re off to explore the legendary Ngorongoro Crater! The adventure begins early, as your guide picks you up and heads toward this world-famous natural wonder, located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The crater resembles something out of The Lost World—a vast, self-contained ecosystem where tens of thousands of wild animals roam within the remnants of an ancient, collapsed volcano. Though compact in size, the crater holds the highest density of wildlife per square meter anywhere on Earth, offering an exceptional opportunity to see a wide variety of species up close.

The descent into the crater takes about 30 minutes, passing through lush, green forest landscapes along a winding road. Your guide will pause at a scenic lookout point, where you’ll enjoy an awe-inspiring panoramic view of the entire caldera below. While many believe the animals are confined to the crater, they are actually free to leave. Still, most choose to stay, as the area provides constant grazing for herbivores and easy access to prey for predators.

Inside the crater, you’ll likely encounter elephants, buffalo, zebras, antelope, lions, cheetahs, and many other species. Ngorongoro is also one of the few places in Africa where you might catch a glimpse of the endangered black rhino—though sightings are rare. Interestingly, you won’t see any giraffes here; their long legs and necks make it difficult for them to navigate the steep crater walls.

After your morning game drive, you’ll stop for a picnic lunch at Lake Magadi, a popular gathering spot for both visitors and wildlife. The area is home to many birds, including cheeky kites that might swoop in to snatch unattended food. While they’re harmless, it’s best to keep your snacks close! As you enjoy your meal, you might also spot hippos lounging near the water’s edge or surfacing for air. If one happens to emerge from the lake and walk by, be sure to give it plenty of room.

Thanks to its rich biodiversity and ecological importance, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site—a truly remarkable destination in the heart of Africa.

Today, you’ll journey to the world-renowned Serengeti National Park—arguably the most iconic safari destination on the planet. As one of Tanzania’s largest and most wildlife-rich parks, the Serengeti offers unforgettable opportunities to spot animals such as lions, elephants, giraffes, antelopes, buffaloes, and zebras. With some luck, you may even see elusive predators like cheetahs and serval cats, along with other fascinating creatures of the savannah.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Serengeti is celebrated for its vital ecosystem, dense concentrations of wildlife, and the spectacular Great Migration—an annual natural event unlike any other. This vast landscape also inspired the setting for Disney’s The Lion King, though what you’ll experience here is far from animated—it’s raw, real, and breathtakingly wild.

Your day will focus on the central region of the park, known as Seronera. This area is famed for its stunning scenery and abundance of wildlife, making it an ideal spot for game viewing and capturing incredible photographs.

Your journey through the Serengeti continues today in the heart of the park—Seronera, a vast and vibrant region teeming with wildlife. Covering such an expansive area, Seronera can’t be fully explored in a single day, so your guide will take you to new locations and help you discover more of the region’s hidden wonders and fascinating animals.

This part of the Serengeti is home to some of Africa’s most elusive species, including rhinos, leopards, serval cats, and caracals. With another full day on safari, your chances of spotting these rare creatures in their natural habitat greatly increase, giving you an even deeper appreciation for the wild beauty of this extraordinary ecosystem.

Today marks your final day exploring the heart of the Serengeti. Each day in the savannah brings fresh and unforgettable moments—no two days are ever the same. The lions you saw lounging yesterday may be out hunting today, and elephants that wandered off might return, curious and bold. If you’re lucky, a cheetah could even leap onto your vehicle for a better view—an incredible photo opportunity!

This is also the perfect time to visit the Serengeti’s iconic Kopjes—ancient rock formations formed from volcanic activity long ago. These rugged outcrops dot the Seronera landscape and are a favorite resting place for wildlife, making them an excellent backdrop for safari photography.

Don’t miss the chance to see Simba Rock, a spot that inspired the legendary scene from The Lion King where Mufasa holds up young Simba. Right here in Seronera, you can witness the real-life version of that famous view—a magical way to end your journey in Central Serengeti.

Rest in the hotel and transfer to the airport.

Note: Hotel check-out is at 10:00 AM. In case you need a late check-out before your evening flight, you have the option to extend your hotel stay for an extra fee. Let your manager know in advance if you need a late check-out.
